Welcome to the Tweed region

Welcome to the Tweed regionWith 37 kilometres of unspoiled surf beaches framing a valley of coastal wetlands and estuarine forests, rich farmland and lush pastoral country, a network of fascinating waterways, mountainous regions that are home to three world heritage-listed National Parks, and a perfect temperate climate, the Tweed truly is a natural wonder. A heaven for holiday makers.

Situated on the Queensland/New South Wales border, the Tweed is just over an hours drive to Brisbane and a half-hour to the bustle of the Gold Coast. With Byron and Ballina to the south, Kyogle to the west, and Beaudesert to the north-west, the Tweed is centrally located in Australia's holiday playground.

Towering over the Tweed Valley is Mount Warning, the central core of the Southern Hemisphere's largest extinct shield volcano. Titled Wollumbin, meaning cloud catcher , by the Aboriginal community, it is the first place on Australia's mainland to be touched by the morning sun. A climb to the summit to watch the day dawn is a must for the adventurous. In the surrounding Nightcap, Border Ranges, Springbrook and Lamington National Parks, species of the sup-tropical and temperate zones overlap in a unique environment to provide spectacular rainforest scenery with natural streams and brooks, abundant bird and wildlife.

The valley itself is a rolling patchwork of green, with farms, sugar cane fields and natural wooded areas delighting the eye at every turn. Charming country villages nestle against the hills or bask in the riverside sun. Along the coast, seaside villages anchor magnificent expanses of unspoiled, uncrowded surf beaches broken only by rivers, rocky estuaries and scenic headlands. Barefoot days and balmy nights make the Tweed coast unsurpassed for serious relaxation. The three main centres are Tweed Heads, which adjoins Coolangatta forming the Twin Towns of Queensland and New South Wales; South Tweed Heads stretching along the river estuary and the country town of Murwillimbah, settled by the early pioneers.
